CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (March 26) – United World Wrestling has joined with the International Olympic Committee, and the United Nation’s Framework on Climate Change program ‘Sport for Climate Action’ to raise awareness and implement concrete actions on the Paris Climate Agreement.
“Today more than ever, we realise the consequences of our civilisation impact on the planet,” said United World Wrestling president Nenad Lalovic. “Therefore, it is our responsibility as the international federation for the sport to discuss the effects of climate action with our worldwide wrestling family.”
The agreement will allow United World Wrestling to implement various development and educational programming for its members, such as:
• Undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility
• Reduce overall climate impact
• Educate for climate action
• Promote sustainable and responsible consumption
• Advocate for climate action though communication
To help support the launch of the initiative United World Wrestling Development Department is planning to deliver workshops and seminars for all 187-member associations during development and sporting events.
“It is our responsibility to promote initiatives through our sport and make the next generation aware of the impact climate change will have on their future,” said UWW Development director Deqa Niamkey. “Climate change is an important topic and we need to take all the necessary actions to promote and implement actions.”
Niamkey expects educational workshops will begin at the African and Asian Senior Championships and during the upcoming workshops for national federations.
