Unexpected Champions Highlight Day Four of Wrestling at European Games

BAKU (June16) – When Russia figured their odds of a gold medal coming out of Tuesday’s women’s wrestling competition, Valeria LAZINSKAYA (63kg) was likely a massive underdog.

Ranked No.9 in the world, Lazinskaya faced a crowded field of competitors, including top-ranked and defending world champion Yulia TKACH (UKR), No.3 Anastasija GRIGORJEVA (LAT) and No.4. Maria MAMASHUK (BLR). Meanwhile established Russian heavy-hitters No. 4 Valeria KOBLOVA (58kg) and No.5 Ekaterina BUKINA (75kg) sat atop their fields.

But when the flames of the pyrotechnic finals show at the Heydar Aliyev Arena ceased late on Tuesday night Koblova was hurt and Bukina earned silver, leaving Lazinskaya as the only Russian with gold draped around her neck.

"When you stand on the podium and you see the flag of your country rising and the anthem sounding, you have one second of your own mini-victory,” said Lazinskaya.”I felt proud and think I have contributed something to my country, Russia."

The victory was also a revenge win of sorts for Lazinskaya who at last year’s world championships in Tashkent lost in the final seconds of her match versus Tkach. Having prevailed in the rematch Lazinskaya basked in Tkach’s frustration and disappointment.

"Her emotional reaction is understandable,” said Lazinskaya. “Now I have taken over."

Azerbaijan earned another gold medal in women’s wrestling with their own surprise showing by Anzhela DOROGAN (AZE). The Baku native put on a workman-like performance in the finals against a bloodied and battered Roksana ZASINA (POL), 2-0. The pair’s match was stopped several times so that Zasina’s head could be wrapped, but despite the dripping blood and both Dorogan and Zasina slapped, clawed and hand-fought for position leaving quite the show for the more than 3000 fans in attendance.

"This is my first victory in a big tournament,” said Dorogan. “And it’s in my home town and at the European Games. It's crazy, I can't believe it."

In the night’s two other finals it was business as usual No.7 Emese BARKA (HUN) beat Tetyana LAVRENCHU (UKR), 3-2 at 58kg and No.11 Vasilisa MARZALIUK (BLR) posted a mild upset over No.5 Ekaterina BUKINA (RUS), 5-4

The night also saw wrestling’s oldest and youngest competitors medal. Unda GONZALEZ a 37-year-old sheep herder from Spain bested No. 20 Maria SELMAIER (GER), 5-2 in one of the 75kg bronze medal matches, while 18-year-old Grace BULLEN (NOR) took bronze at 58kg pinning local Irina NETREBA (AZE) in less than a minute. T

The European Games were Bullen’s first at the senior-level having last year won the Cadet World Championships and the Youth Olympic Games.

"It feels great, because I've always heard that age means a lot in wrestling, that I'm young and have to wait to start performing,” said Bullen. “But I think I've shown that I can deliver even though I'm young."

Wrestling at the Heydar Aliyev Arena continues tomorrow at 10am with freestyle wrestling action at 57kg, 65kg, 74kg and 97kg. Be sure to check UnitedWorldWrestling.org for up-to-the-minute results, photographs and recaps.
