Lee Rallies for Late Win -- U.S., Iran Split Gold Medals in Jr World Freestyle

MACON, France (3 September) – Defending champion Spencer LEE (USA) rallied late for his second title while the United States and Iran shared the gold medals Saturday, the first of freestyle events at the Junior World Wrestling Championships.
Lee, who breezed through four easy wins in the morning session, overcame deficits of four and five points in the 50kg final at Le Spot arena to salvage an 11-9 victory from Khurshid PARPIEV (KGZ), making his international debut from the mountainous central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan.
Parpiev pancaked Lee to his back off a bodylock position one minute into the bout with the champion appearing to be in danger of being pinned. Lee, however, managed to right the ship and narrow the deficit to 4-2 at the break.
The Kyrgyz challenger opened up an 8-3 lead in the second period, trapping Lee on his back twice in a scramble for the takedown, before Lee shifted into high gear with three straight takedowns for the lead, and then added a rollover exposure for an 11-9 victory.
Lee told reporters after the bout that he had not been able to get much sleep the previous night, and apparently getting emotional over his near-miss with a loss, he remarked “I don’t know what I would have done if I had lost.”
Meanwhile, after struggling with a pair of close bouts earlier, Mark HALL (USA) reversed rolls with his American teammate in the 74kg final, locking in a crossed-leg grip and rolling up a technical fall in only 31 seconds against Asian junior champion Ahmad Yousef BAZRIGHALEH (IRI).
Despite the loss by Bazrighalegh, Iran grabbed the first-day lead in the team standings with victories by Peiman BIABANI (60kg) and Hossein SHAHBAZIGAZVAR (96kg).
With four weight categories in the books, Iran leads with 29 points – one point ahead of Russia with three bronze medalists. The United States is third with 23 points followed by Georgia another point behind.
In an overly cautious 60kg final, Dan Kolov tourney champion Biabani did it one point at a time against two-time European junior silver medalist Selim KOZAN (TUR) with an “activity clock” point and a pair of step-outs for a 3-1 victory.
In the evening’s finale, Shahbazigazvar chipped away at 2015 European junior silver medalist Erik THIELE (GER) with leg attacks and force-outs for a 7-1 triumph.
In one of the bronze medal bouts at 74kg, European junior bronze medal winner Tariel GAPRINDASHVILI (GEO) spotted 2014 runner-up Murad SULEYMANOVA a nine-point lead, then went from a front headlock to an inside hook and trip for the fall at 2:39.
The championships conclude Sunday with freestyle competition at 55kg, 66kg, 84kg and 120kg.
