Stadnyk, Wiebe Post Big Wins at German Grand Prix for Women

DORMAGEN, Germany – Second-ranked wrestlers Mariya STADNYK (AZE) and Erica WIEBE (CAN) made serious arguments to be No.1 in the FILA World Rankings with big wins at the German Grand Prix for women’s wrestling.
European champion Stadnyk showed some power coming from behind to pin 2012 world champion Jessica MacDONALD (CAN) in the second round at 48kg, while Wiebe had to rally in the final 20 seconds of the 75kg final for a 5-4 win over European silver medalist Vasilisa MARZALIUK (BLR).
Stadnyk, undefeated in 2014, won her fourth title of the year, while Wiebe appears to be over a mid-March slump as she also notched her fourth tourney triumph after a lackluster 2-2 showing at the World Cup in Tokyo.
Meanwhile, Aline FOCKEN (GER), No.4 in the June rankings, rolled to her third tournament title of the year at 69kg, while another local favorite Nadine WEINAUGE (GER) stunned top-ranked Anastasija GRIGORJEVA (LAT) with a fall in the quarterfinals at 63kg.
In the bronze medal matches, MacDonald avenged a loss in the Canadian national team trials to Jasmine MIAN (CAN) with an 11-0 technical fall in the first period. MacDonald’s win, however, reportedly will not reverse Mian’s win in early May.
Five-time European champion Natalia GOLTS (RUS) returned to international competition after a two-year hiatus and grabbed a bronze medal at 58kg after a 7-5 loss to world bronze medalist Emese BARKA (HUN) in the semifinals.
