ISTANBUL (June 27) – Hannes WAGNER (GER) arrived in Istanbul respected but not really feared after fifth-place finishes at both the junior European and world championships in 2014. 

A police officer in training, however, Wagner quickly showed wrestlers and their fans at Bagcilar Sports Complex that there’s a new sheriff in town, taking down the reigning European and world champions to claim the 74kg crown at the European junior wrestling championships on Saturday.

Wagner edged European junior champion Gela BOLKVADZE (GEO), 4-2, in the semifinals and then handcuffed junior world champion and crowd favorite Furkan BAYRAK (TUR) for a 3-1 triumph in the Greco-Roman gold medal final.

“This is such an amazing feeling,” Hannes said after accepting his first-ever medal in major international competition. “I know now that I can wrestle with the best.”

Throughout the final, Wagner deflected Bayrak’s attacks with balance-breaks to the left and right, following up one snap-down in the second period for a takedown from behind, and then making those two points stand for the win.

“The difference tonight was that I had spent the last 12 months training and wrestling in the first division of the German Bundesliga,” said Wagner. “Our club has great coaches and teammates, and I learned so much from them.”

As for the vocal Bayrak supporters, Wagner said “I wasn’t really worried about them; I knew they would be loud. But, I believed that if wrestled my best, everything would be ok.”

The other world champion wrestling on Saturday was Orkhan NURIEV (AZE), who defeated Evgeni GENCHEV (BUL), 2-1, at 96kg for his first-ever continental triumph.

Nuriev’s victory also gave Azerbaijan two champions on the first evening of Greco-Roman finals as Nofal BABAEV (AZE) kicked off the gold medal finals with a 7-6 win over 2014 bronze medal winner Aleksei KINZHIGALIEV (RUS).

Although Bayrak was denied a gold medal at 74kg, Firat MURAT (TUR) earned a gold medal for Turkey at 60kg with a pair of duck-under takedowns in the second period for a 6-2 win over Parviz NASIBOV (UKR), the world cadet silver winner last year.

In the team rankings, Georgia enjoys the first-day lead with 32 points from four bronze medal winners. Turkey follows with 29 points, including 19 points from its two finalists.

Russia is in third place with a silver and bronze medal and 26 points while Azerbaijan, which claimed two gold medalists on the first day, lags behind in sixth place with 20 points.

Wrestling concludes Sunday with action at 55, 66, 84 and 120kg in Greco-Roman.

Bien que Bayrak n’ai pas gagné de médaille d’or à 74 kg, Firat MURAT (TUR)  a remporté l’or pour la Turquie à 60 kg en battant le médaillé d’argent des Championnats du monde cadet de l’année passée Parviz NASIBOV (UKR),  6-2.

 Dans les classements par équipe, la Géorgie est première avec 32 points grâce à quatre médaillés de bronze. La Turquie est deuxième avec 29 points, dont 19 ont été remportés par ses deux finalises.

La Russie est troisième avec une médaille d’argent et une médaille de bronze pour un total de 26 points, tandis que l’Azerbaïdjan traine en sixième place avec 20 points, malgré ses deux médaillés d’or du premier jour.

La compétition se termine dimanche avec les matchs de lutte gréco-romaine à 55, 66, 84 et 120kg .
