SARAJEVAO, Bosnia and Herzegovina (July 27) – Roxana TIF (ROU) and Anna SZEL (HUN) claimed gold medals on Thursday at the Cadet European Championships, upgrading the silver medals won a year ago. Both defeated wrestlers from Russia in the finals.

Tif edged Viktoriia ALEKSANDROVA (RUS) 6-6 on criteria in the gold-medal match at 43kg. Aleksandrova scored the first takedown and took a 2-0 lead into the break. She extended her lead to 6-0 in the second period after a takedown and gut wrench turn. Tif methodically worked her back into the match and then scored the go-ahead points in the final five seconds to win on criteria.

Szel, who finished ninth at the Cadet World Championships last year, won by fall over  Aleksandra PROKINA (RUS) in the gold-medal match at 56kg. The Hungarian held a tight 4-3 lead late in the match, and with just under 30 seconds left drove Prokina to her back and secured the fall.

Russia had finalists in all five gold-medal matches contested, but only Mariia TIUMEREKOVA came out victorious, winning gold at 49kg. She shut out Tetiana PROFATILOVA (UKR) 6-0 in the finals.

Returning cadet world bronze medalist Oksana CHUDYK (UKR) cruised to the title at 65kg, beating Anna KRASNOVA (RUS) 6-1 in the finals. Chudyk came out strong in the second period, scoring a takedown 30 seconds into the period before adding two more takedowns to win by five.

Shahana NAZAROVA (AZE), a fifth-place finisher at last year's Cadet World Championships, won the first gold medal of the night at 38kg, and did so in dominant fashion. She won by 10-0 technical fall in the first period over Luchana BEKBAULOVA (RUS). Nazarova was unscored upon in the tournament.

Ukraine won two bronze medals to go along with the gold won by Chudyk and silver won by Profatilova. Mariia TOMYSHCH won bronze at 38kg, while Violleta PETROVSKA claimed bronze at 56kg.
