Three Silver Medalists Slip in Yearend Women’s Rankings with Post-Vegas Losses

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (December 9) – Three of the eight female wrestlers who left Las Vegas with silver medals in September will kick off 2016 ranked lower in the United World Wrestling rankings after losses in the late-season Golden Grand Prix Final.
SUKHEE Tserenchimed (MGL), ZHOU Feng (CHN) and ZHOU Qian (CHN) all slipped in the final rankings for 2015 after losing to or being eliminated in Baku by world bronze medalists who edged higher in the yearend poll.
A fourth world silver medalist also lost in Baku, but Sofia MATTSSON (SWE) holds onto the No.2 position at 53kg. Mattsson fell in the 53kg final, 2-1, to world champion Helen MAROULIS (USA), who finishes 2015 atop the 55kg rankings.
Meanwhile, all eight world champions hold onto their positions on top of the yearend rankings even though SORONZONBOLD Battsetseg (MGL) was stung with a loss in Baku. The world champ at 63kg fell in a lackadaisical performance against unranked junior world silver medalist Ragneta GURBANZADE (AZE).
Along with Maroulis and Soronzonbold, Natalya VOROBIEVA (RUS) was the only other world champion in action in Baku, cruising to the title at 69kg.
The biggest move in the yearend rankings was posted by Elena PIROZHKOVA (USA) at 69kg, leaping six positions to No.6 at light heavyweight.
Pirozhkova took the 63kg crown with wins over world bronze medalists Valeria LAZINSKAYA (RUS) and Taybe YUSEIN (BUL). The 2012 world champion reportedly will wrestle at 63kg in the run-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The final rankings for 2015 take into account as many events on the United World Wrestling calendar as possible with the world championships given the largest consideration followed by continental competitions and the grand prix events.
The top six wrestlers in each weight category at the world championships were awarded the top six positions in September, but a handful of those positions were reevaluated in light of head-to-head encounters in October and November.
The bulk of the rankings were determined, in part, by a wrestler’s performance in Las Vegas, when applicable, along with results in competition throughout 2015.
Wrestlers in the rankings are listed by name, country code, most notable or most recent result over the last 12 months, and their position in the previous rankings.
48kg – Valentina ISLAMOVA (RUS), who opened 2015 with a win at the Yarygin Grand Prix in January, held on for a 2-1 triumph over Jessica BLASZKA (NED) in the Golden Grand Prix Final to edge ahead of the world bronze medalist as No.4 in the rankings.
