Sastin Wins Third Leg of Hungarian Challenge Series at Poland Open

WARSAW (July 26) – Mission accomplished for Marianna SASTIN (HUN) as the former world champion notched a technical fall over teammate Emese BARKA (HUN) in the Poland Open of women’s wrestling to book her ticket for Las Vegas in September.

Sastin steamrollered Barka with throws and gut wrenches in the 58kg semifinals in a bout that the victor described as “Perfect. I could feel that all of my mind and body were in perfect sync.”

Although Sastin surrendered the Poland Open crown to BAATARJAV Shoovdor (MGL) by default, she was elated to be going to the world championships in Las Vegas at a weight category where a top-six finish will qualify her for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“Yes, I have a lot of little aches and pains, but still I feel great,” said Sastin with a twinkle in her blackened eye.

“My next goal is to win a gold medal.  I know that (perennial champion) Kaori ICHO (JPN) is at 58kg and she will be very tough, but I believe that everyone can be beaten sometime.”

Also on the final day of the Open, European Games silver medalist Katarzyna KRAWCZYK (POL) stormed from six points down to a 7-6 victory over Liubov SALNIKOVA (RUS) in the 53kg final to give the locals their first champion in three days to cheer about.

On the final day of the Pytlasinski Greco-Roman tourney, world and Olympic Games champions Roman VLASOV (RUS) and Alexej MISHIN (RUS) won at 75kg and 85kg, respectively.

London 2012 gold medalist Vlasov forced a technical fall on Bozo STARCEVIC (CRO), 8-0 at 4:33, while the ageless 2004 Athens champion Mishin hammered out a 1-1 win over two-time world bronze medal winner Viktor LORINCZ (HUN).

The final day of the Polish internationals would not be complete without a world champion or two being tripped up.

In the Pytlasinski portion of the competition, Melonin NOUMONVI (FRA), looking to defend his 85kg crown in Las Vegas, allowed Artur OMAROV (CZE) to spin behind at the edge of the mat for a takedown midway through the second period for a 3-1 win.

In the women’s events, 2010 world champion SORONZONBOLD Battsetseg (MGL) got trapped in a reverse arm lock and barrel-roll by Adela HANZLICKOVA (CZE) and lost her opening bout at 63kg by fall.
