Yoshida Targets Olympic Gold for Fourth Time, Challengers in Waiting

Women’s Wrestling, 53kg (19 entries) -- Venue: Carioca Arena 2, Barra Olympic Park -- Time: Thursday, August 18: 10:00-13:00 and 16:00-19:00

Favorite: Saori YOSHIDA (JPN) has ruled in the women’s lightweight category (55kg, 53kg from 2014), winning three Olympic Games gold medals and 13 world titles (2002-2015), while losing only twice at the 2008 and 2012 World Cup meets.

But, she has had some close calls, most notably at the 2014 Asian Games where she was tripped to her back by ZHONG Xuechun (CHN) and was only a heartbeat away from hearing the referee slap the mat. She fought off her back, however, and rallied for a 12-9 win.

Yoshida, at 33, wrestles less these days and has lost a step off her leg attacks. But, her defense is solid and her mat sense is catlike. And she can still strike quickly enough to score the points she needs.

Challengers: Sofia MATTSSON (SWE) has spent this Olympic cycle accepting silver medals behind Yoshida at the world championships.

The five-time European champion, however, keeps getting closer. She had the early lead in Las Vegas before giving up a pair of step-out points and a 2-1 decision to the world champ.

Helen MAROULIS (USA) comes to Rio 2016 with her first world title at the non-Olympic 55kg weight category. Hopes are high following wins at 53kg over world bronze medalist Odunayo ADEKUOROYE (NGR), 6-6, and Mattsson, 2-1, in the Golden Grand Prix Final in November.

Maroulis, who was coached by Yoshida’s Japanese rival Seiko YAMAMOTO (JPN) in 2013-2014, also dominated the Ulaanbaatar world qualifier for Rio 2016 with a fall and a pair of technical falls.

Odunayo ADEKUOROYE (NGR) captured the attention of the fans at her world championships debut in Las Vegas with her charge to the bronze medal, pinning Zhong off a double-leg attack, her unmasked joy of wrestling and her singing between bouts.

Dark Horse: ZHONG Xuechen (CHN) finished in third place at the Golden Grand Prix Final after losing, 4-2, to Mattsson in the semifinals. Zhong, 22, won the UWW Test Event with wins over former world bronze medal winners Alyssa LAMPE (USA) and LI Hui (CHN).

Soronzonbold Seeks Wrestling Gold for Mongolia, Tkach Wants 2nd for Ukraine

Women’s Wrestling, 63kg (19 entries) -- Venue: Carioca Arena 2, Barra Olympic Park -- Time: Thursday, August 18: 10:00-13:00 and 16:00-19:00

Co-Favorites: Two-time world champion SORONZONBOLD Battsetseg (MGL) is also the London 2012 bronze medalist and 2013 world silver medalist, both in losses to Kaori ICHO (JPN), who wrestles now at 58kg.

In Las Vegas, Soronzonbold crushed a single-leg attempt by former Icho understudy Risako KAWAI (JPN) for the fall at 0:36 in the championship final. Since then, however, she has won only one event – the Mongolian Open – and was pinned by Yulia TKACH (UKR) in the semifinals of the Poland Open.

With a bronze medal at London 2012, Soronzonbold, 26, now looks to win Mongolia’s first Olympic Games gold medal in wrestling.

Tkach, 26, will try to win the second Olympic Games gold medal in women’s wrestling for Ukraine. The first was won by Irina MELNIK-MERLENI (UKR) at 48kg at Athens 2004 – the first-ever Olympic Games gold medal awarded in women’s wrestling.

Challengers: Maria MAMASHUK (BLR) has been on a roll in 2016, undefeated in five events this year including the European championships, where she defeated Ilana KRATYSH (ISR), 9-0, for the 69kg crown.

Two-time junior world champion Risako KAWAI (JPN) won the silver medal at 63kg in Las Vegas and cruised to her second Asian title in February.

Elena PIROZHKOVA (USA) won a complete set of world championship medals, 2012-2014, beginning with the gold medal in Strathcona County, Canada. Pirozhkova, 29, has wrestled much of the last two years at 69kg, but dropped to 63kg for a triumph at the Golden Grand Prix Final.

Dark Horse: Anastasija GRIGORJEVA (LAT) won her fourth European title in March with a contested 3-3 criteria victory over Tkach and owns a bronze medal from Tashkent 2014.
