Four years after being inducted into the United World Wrestling Hall of Fame, Olympic champion Carol Huynh has been inducted into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame, it was announced this week. 

Huynh was one of six athletes, two builders and one team who joined Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame this year.

She becomes the fourth wrestler to be inducted into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame, joining James Trifunov (1960), Earl McCready (1967) and Daniel Igali (2007). 

Huynh became Canada’s first-ever Olympic champion in women’s wrestling when she captured the gold medal at 48kg at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. In 2012, she won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Huynh was a four-time world medalist (one silver, three bronze), 11-time national champion, two-time Pan American Games champion and Commonwealth Games champion. 

She retired from wrestling competition in 2012, and was influential in seeing wrestling remain in the Olympic Games, presenting at the IOC Congress in Buenos Aires in 2013.

In 2015, Huynh was chosen as a United World Wrestling Super 8 Ambassador. She is President of the United World Wrestling Athletes Commission, and was an assistant Chef de Mission for Team Canada at Rio 2016. 

Huynh serves as an assistant coach at the Dinos Wrestling Club at the University of Calgary and Next Generation coach at the Canadian Sport Institute in Calgary.

Induction ceremonies will take place on Nov. 9 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
