CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (June 3) – Irina OLOGONOVA (RUS) and Carolina CASTILLO HIDALGO (COL) were the big winners in the contest of chutes and ladders that were the United World Wrestling rankings for women in June.
World silver medalist Ologonova shrugged off a winless World Cup outing in March, which sent her plummeting to No.13 in the rankings, with three technical falls and a fall at the German Grand Prix for the title at 55kg and No.3 in the rankings.
Meanwhile, South American Games gold medalist Castillo won a bronze medal at the Olympia Tournament in Greece and then topped that with the German Grand Prix crown to go from unranked to No.10 at 48kg.
Another winner for June was Marwa AMRI (TUN), who returned to international competition for her third African championships title and No.13 in the rankings at 58kg. Amri, who won five tournament titles at 55kg in 2014, was the first woman from Africa to be ranked No.1 by World Wrestling.
Also at 58kg, 2013 world champion Marianna SASTIN (HUN) defeated world bronze medalist Emese BARKA (HUN) in the Dormagen finals to bound to No.8 in the rankings while leveling the world team challenge series between the Hungarian rivals at one win each.
World champion Aline FOCKEN (GER) continued her slide at 69kg with an early loss by injury default in Dormagen to slump to No.6 in the rankings.
And, while many of the top wrestlers in each of the categories are preparing for the inaugural European Games in Baku or world team trials in their respective countries, London 2012 Olympic Games gold medalists Kaori ICHO (JPN) and Natalia VOROBIEVA (RUS) were busy on the mats.
Icho, top-ranked since the inception of the rankings in 2013, rolled over the field at 58kg for her fifth Asian championships title while Vorobieva dominated all challengers in Dormagen to mark her return to the top of the rankings at 69kg.
Wrestlers in the rankings are listed by name, country code, most recent or most notable result over the last 12 months, and their position in the previous rankings.
48kg – South American Games gold medalist Carolina CASTILLO HIDALGO (COL) rolled to the German Grand Prix title with a pair of technical falls and an injury default from 2012 world champion Jessica MacDONALD (CAN) to break into the 2015 rankings at No.10.
