Freestyle Champion Makhov to Make Greco-Roman Debut
Saturday, September 13, 2014 - 05:06 By William May
TASHKENT (September 13) – Three-time freestyle world champion Beylal MKAHOV (RUS) will try to follow in the footsteps of Greco-Roman greats Alexander KARELIN (RUS) and Khassan BAROEV (RUS) when the curtain goes up Saturday on Day 6 of wrestling’s World Championship.
Makhov was last seen with a freestyle bronze medal draped around his neck at the London 2012 Olympic Games, but the man-mountain returns to the mats at the Gymnastics Palace in Tashkent.
And for fans who like to argue the merits of freestyle and the classic style, a possible showdown with four-time Greco-Roman world champion Mijain LOPEZ NUNEZ (CUB) in the semifinals is on the horizon for Makhov.
That aside, the penultimate day of the championships will also feature action among champions and challengers at 66kg and 80kg.
European champions Adam KURAK (RUS) and Tamas LORINCZ (HUN) stand out at 66kg along with London 2012 Olympic Games gold medalist Omid NOROOZI (IRI) and 2010 world champion Hasan ALIYEV (AZE).
At 80kg, a new non-Olympic weight category installed in January, top-ranked Peter BACSI (HUN), two-time former world champion Selcuk CEBI (TUR) and London 2012 bronze medalists Alekander KAZAKEVIC (LTU) and Emin AHMADOV (AZE) will still battle like a ticket to Rio 2016 were at stake.
66kg (38 entries)
European champions Adam KURAK (RUS) and Tamas LORINCZ (HUN), coming down from the non-Olympic weight category of 71kg, have drawn to the top quarter of the bracket and will likely meet in the round of 16.
Drawn next to them are London 2012 gold medalist Omid NOROOZI (IRI) and last year’s world bronze medalist Frank STABLER (GER), who will also likely meet in the round of 16 with the winner advancing to the semifinals against one of the European champs.
European silver medalist Hasan ALIYEV (AZE), also the winner of the Golden Grand Prix Final in July, begins in the preliminaries and appears headed to a meeting with GGP Final runner-up Revaz LASHKHI (GEO) in the quarterfinals.
European bronze medalist Istvan LEVAI (SVK), Pytlasinski runner-up Dominik ETLINGER (CRO) and GGP Final runner-up Davor STEFANEK (SRB) will battle for the final semifinal berth.
80kg (29 entries)
Two-time former world champion Selcuk CEBI (TUR) begins at the top of the bracket, while European champion and top-ranked Peter BACSI (HUN) begins in the middle. Both could be headed to a replay of their European championships survival match in the final.
Obstacles are scattered throughout the bracket and in the quarterfinals Cebi could very well stumble over Habbibolah AKHLAGHI (IRI), who tripped up Bacsi at Hungarian Grand Prix in March.
Pytlasinski winner Evgeni SALEEV (RUS), making his world championships debut, and runner-up Viktor SASUNOVSKI (BLR) could also meet again in the quarters for the second semifinal berth.
To reach the semifinals in the lower half of the bracket, Bacsi will likely have to get by one of the London 2012 bronze medalists Aleksandr KAZAKEVIC (LTU) or Emin AHMADOV (AZE), who are likely opponents in the round of 16.
European bronze medalist Aleksander SHYSHMAN (UKR) and GGP Final bronze medalist Tadeusz MICHALIK (POL) target the final semifinal berth.
130kg (23 entries)
In a category ripe with world champions, Riza KAYAALP (TUR) begins at the top of the bracket while two-time Olympic Games gold medalist Mijain LOPEZ NUNEZ (CUB) looms in the depths of the preliminary pairings.
Kayaalp will attempt to regain the 2011 title he lost in Budapest last year but will likely have to face either last year’s world champ Heiki NABI (EST) or Pytlansinski bronze medalist Kiril GRYSHCHANKO (BLR) in the quarterfinals.
Lopez, seeking a fifth world title and his first since 2010, will likely have to face current or former Asian champions Behnam MEHDIAZDEH (IRI) or Nurmakhan TINALIEV (KAZ) in the quarterfinals.
For the final semifinal berth, former freestyle world champion Beylal MAKHOV (RUS) will be tested early by GGP Final winner Iakobi KAJAIA (GEO).
And then, by world and Olympic bronze medalist Johan EUREN (SWE) or Hungarian Grand Prix bronze medal winner Mindaugas MIZGAITIS (LTU) before getting his chance with Lopez in the semifinals.
