Tournoi de qualification olympique Afrique & Océanie : les inscriptions

HAMMAMET, Tunisie (le 24 mars) --- Le quatrième événement de qualification pour les Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo, le Tournoi de qualification olympique Afrique & Océanie (2-4 avril), débute vendredi prochain. Plus de 150 athlètes venus de 22 pays tenteront de finir au sommet de leur catégorie de poids respective et qualifier ainsi leur pays pour les Jeux Olympiques.

Coupe du Monde : compétition et diplomatie

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (6 avril) – La Coupe du Monde de lutte libre masculine sera au centre d’un théâtre politique compliqué, ou le sujet de la diplomatie sportive est primordial. En effet, les Etats-Unis entretiennent des rapports tendus avec la Russie, n’ont pas su trouver d’accord avec l’Iran sur le sujet de la question nucléaire, et jouit de relations instables avec Cuba.

Au contraire de beaucoup de sports sans contacts, la lutte – qui se pratique sans frapper son adversaire et sans infliger de blessure volontaire – montre bien le rôle important du sport dans le travail de facilitation des rencontres de pays dont les relations sont tendues, en créant un cadre compétitif mais amical.

La Coupe du Monde de lutte libre de l’année passée a fait la une internationale lorsque des équipes de Russie et d’Ukraine ont démontré un esprit sportif et fair-play incroyable, alors même que leurs pays se disputaient des territoires en pratiquant une stratégie du bord de l’abîme.

En plein milieu de cette crise politique, les équipes de la Russie et de l’Ukraine se sont rencontrées dans les premiers rounds de la Coupe du Monde, ont échangé drapeaux, poignées de mains et accolades sur les tapis, et ont partagé des diners et des conversations dans l’hôtel réservés aux équipes – les différences politiques de leurs pays respectifs sont passés au second plan.

« La Coupe du Monde est vraiment un tournoi magnifique, et également une opportunité de nous rapprocher et de nous réunir, nous, la Russie et l’Ukraine » a déclaré le leader de l’équipe de Russie Christakis Alexandridis lors du tournoi de l’année passée.

Cette diplomatie sportive au sein du sport de la lutte remonte jusqu’en 2013, lorsque la Fédération Iranienne de lutte a accueilli la Coupe du Monde a Téhéran, attirant plus de 10'000 spectateurs, un nombre record.

“[The World Cup] was a really great event, and also a great opportunity to bring us, Russia and Ukraine, closer together,” said Russian team leader Christakis Alexandridis during last year’s World Cup.

The history of wrestling diplomacy at the Freestyle Wrestling World Cup extends back to May of 2013 when the Iranian Wrestling Federation hosted the event in Tehran, drawing a record crowd of more than 10,000 spectators to their competition hall.

At the center of that event’s focus was the dual meet between host Iran and the United States. The countries, then at political odds, met on the mats with Iran defeating the United States, 6-1. Only Olympic champion Jordan BURROUGHS won his match for the American squad, an accomplishment met with an impressively raucous and magnanimous reception by the Iranian fans.

The teams later met and posed for a group photo with then-President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, an occasion that became international news. Burroughs boiled down that meeting, which could have been interpreted in a million ways, to its truest importance.

"We're not politicians. We're not humanitarians.” Burroughs told USA Today last year. “We're wrestlers."

The 2015 Men’s Freestyle World Cup seems poised to once again promote this peaceful sporting relationships between countries with political challenges. Teams from the USA and Cuba are already scheduling several off-the-mat mat interactions in the shadow of their country’s recent agreement to improve diplomatic relations.

“We expect another successful event between competitors, but we also see the value in the fair play and camaraderie between teams whose nations are sometimes at political odds,” said United World Wrestling president Nenad Lalovic. “The World Cup is a great showcase for the values important in our sport.”

The Freestyle World Cup begins Saturday, April 11 at 3pm PT/6pm ET. Livestreaming, results photographs and articles can be found at UnitedWorldWrestling.org.

Le point le plus important de ce tournoi était la rencontre entre l’Iran et les Etats-Unis. Ces pays, alors dans une situation politique compliquée, se sont affrontés sur les tapis et l’Iran a battu les Etats-Unis 6-1. Seul le champion olympique Jordan BURROUGHS (USA) a remporté son match pour l’équipe des Etats-Unis, et a été acclamé par le public iranien.

Les équipes ont plus tard posé pour la photo de groupe avec le président de l’époque, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, une photo qui a fait la une de la presse internationale. Burroughs a redéfini cet évènement qui aurait pu être interprété d’un million de façons différentes.

« Nous ne sommes pas des politiciens. Nous ne faisons pas de l’humanitaire. » a déclaré Burroughs à USA Today News à l’époque. « Nous sommes des lutteurs. »

La Coupe du Monde de lutte libre masculine de 2015 semble être l’occasion de promouvoir à nouveau cet esprit de fair-play sportif entre les pays qui rencontrent des difficultés politiques. Des équipes des Etats-Unis et de Cuba sont déjà en train d’organiser des rencontres hors compétition, faisant écho aux récents accords passés pour améliorer les relations diplomatiques entre leurs pays.

« Cet événement sera certainement un succès pour ceux qui y participent, mais nous accordons également beaucoup d’importance au fair-play et à la camaraderie entre les équipes dont les pays sont parfois opposés politiquement » déclare le président d’United World Wrestling Nenad Lalovic. « La Coupe du monde est une belle opportunité de montrer les valeurs chères à notre sport. »

La Coupe du Monde de lutte libre commence le samedi 11 avril, à 3pm PT/6pm ET. Une diffusion en live, des photos et des articles seront publiés sur UnitedWorldWrestling.org.
