De nombreux champions du monde et champions olympiques attendus au tournoi panaméricain de qualification olympique

Le tournoi de qualification olympique panaméricain est prévu du 13 au 15 mars prochain à Ottawa au Canada. L'événement joue le rôle de tournoi de qualification pour les Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo : les deux meilleurs athlètes de chaque tableau obtiendront une place pour leur pays dans leur classe de poids respective.

Le qualificatif panaméricain est la deuxième des trois phases qualificatives. La première était le championnat du monde 2019, où les six premiers de chaque catégorie de poids olympique se sont qualifiés pour Tokyo. La dernière sera le tournoi mondial de qualification de Sodia en Bulgarie, prévu plus tard cette année.

Les festivités commenceront par la lutte gréco-romaine ce vendredi dans les six catégories de poids et seront suivies par la lutte féminine samedi. La lutte libre hommes clora le spectacle dimanche. L'événement est diffusé en direct sur unitedworldwrestling.org.

Qualifiés: Colombie (86kg), États-Unis (74kg, 97kg)

57 kg
Reineri ANDREU ORTEGA (CUB), champion du monde des U23 en 2017 et 2019, tient le haut de l'affiche de cette catégorie. Il a remporté le championnat panaméricain d'Ottawa la semaine dernière.

Partageront le tapis avec lui le médaillé mondial d'argent 2017 Thomas GILMAN (USA) et le médaillé de bronze des panaméricains 2020 Juan RAMIREZ BELTRE (DOM).

65 kg
Alejandro VALDES TOBIER (CUB), médaillé mondial de bronze 2017 et 2018 et champion des Jeux panaméricains 2019, mène cette catégorie.

Trois des médaillés de la semaine passée concourront ce weekend : le médaillé d'argent Mauricio Javier SANCHEZ SALTOS (ECU), celui de bronze Agustin Alejandro DESTRIBATS (ARG) et Sixto Miguel AUCCAPINA PEDRAGAS (PER).

Champion du championnat panaméricain cette année, John Michael DIAKOMIHALIS (USA) ne s'est pas inscrit au tournoi de qualification olympique. Il sera remplacé par le champion du monde cadet 2012 Zain RETHERFORD (USA).

74 kg
Deux anciens médaillés mondiaux sont inscrits en 74kg, soit Jeandry GARZON CABALLERO (CUB) et Franklin GOMEZ MATOS (PUR).

Garzon fut vice-champion du monde en 2007 et détient trois médailles mondiales de bronze (2005, 2006, 2010), tandis que Gomez fut médaillé d'argent des mondiaux 2011.

Gomez a terminé vice-champion la semaine passée, et Garzon a récolté le bronze. Tous deux ont été vaincus par Jordan BURROUGHS (USA), qui avait qualifié les USA en 74kg grâce à sa médaille de bronze des mondiaux de Noursoultan.

Anthony Jose MONTERO CHIRINOS (VEN), médaillé de bronze il y a quelques jours aux panaméricains, sera également sur le tapis d'Ottawa.

86 kg
Champion du monde en 2018, David TAYLOR (USA) revient à la compétition pour la première fois depuis sa course au titre des mondiaux de Budapest.

Il sera rejoint par les médaillés d'or panaméricain 2020 Yurieski TORREBLANCA QUERALTA (CUB) et Angus Patrick ARTHUR (JAM). Torreblanca est sorti vainqueur de la catégorie des 86 kg et Arthur, vainqueur en 92kg, est devenu le premier Jamaïcain médaillé d'or de l'histoire de la compétition - et de la Jamaïque.

Deux autres médaillés des récents panaméricains concourront, soit les médaillés d'argent Pool Edinson AMBROCIO GREIFO (PER) et Clayton Steven PYE (CAN).

Carlos IZQUIERDO MENDEZ (COL) est lui déjà qualifié pour les JO dans la catégorie des 86kg grâce à la cinquième place qu'il avait obtenue aux mondiaux de Noursoultan.

97 kg
Le favori de cette catégorie est le double médaillé mondial d'argent et médaillé de bronze 2010 Reineris SALAS PEREZ (CUB), qui a concédé la défaite la semaine dernière lors de la finale qui l'opposait à Kyle SNYDER (USA). Snyder avait qualifié les USA pour les JO grâce à une médaille de bronze lors des mondiaux 2019.

Dauphin des 92kg la semaine dernière, Maxwell Lemar LACEY GARITA (CRC) concourra avec les 97kg ce weekend et tentera de qualifier le Costa Rica pour les Jeux pour la première fois de son histoire.

Luis Miguel PEREZ SOSA (DOM), médaillé de bronze il y a quelques jours, sera de nouveau sur les tapis d'Ottawa.

125 kg
Nick GWIAZDOWSKI (USA) sera l'athlète le plus titré en lutte libre de la catégorie des poids lourds avec ses médailles mondiales de bronzes obtenues en 2017 et 2018 et la médaille d'or des Jeux panaméricains 2019.

Sur ses talons cependant et cherchant à le détrôner, le triple médaillé mondial de lutte gréco-romaine Oscar PINO HINDS (CUB), médaillé d'argent en 2019 et de bronze en 2017 et 2018.

Grâce à cette médaille d'argent obtenue à Noursoultan, Pino a qualifié Cuba pour les JO dans la catégorie des130 kg en lutte gréco-romaine. Combattant cette saison en lutte libre, il tentera d'obtenir ce weekend la qualification de son pays dans une seconde catégorie de poids ; il a décroché une médaille de bronze la semaine dernière.

Le médaillé d'argent des panaméricains 2020 Amarveer DHESI (CAN) est également attendu ; il fut champion du monde des juniors en 2014.

Lutte féminine
Qualifiés : États-Unis (68kg, 76kg)

50 kg
Cette catégorie affichera la championne du monde Jessica Anne Marie MACDONALD (CAN), également médaillée de bronze des mondiaux 2011 et 2013.

La vice-championne du monde 2018 Sarah HILDEBRANDT (USA) secouera le prunier des 53kg pour son année de passage dans cette catégorie olympique. Elle est championne des Jeux panaméricains 2019 et détient quatre médailles d'or des championnats.

Trois médaillées de la semaine dernière sont inscrites pour les qualificatifs : la médaillée d'argent Carolina CASTILLO HIDALGO (COL) et les médaillées de bronze Kamila BARBOSA VITO DA SILVA (BRA) et Jacqueline Del Rocio MOLLOCANA ELENO (ECU).

La championne 2019 du championnat panaméricain et médaillée d'argent des Jeux la même année Yusneylis GUZMAN LOPEZ (CUB) sera également présente.

53 kg
La championne du monde 2019 des 55kg Jacarra WINCHESTER (USA) descend elle aussi d'une catégorie et est inscrite en 53kg.

Elle y affrontera d'autres athlètes talentueuses telles que les médaillées d'anciens championnats panaméricains Samantha Leigh STEWART (CAN), Lianna de la Caridad MONTERO HERRERA (CUB) et Luisa Elizabeth VALVERDE MELENDRES (ECU).

Stewart avait remporté le titre en 2016 et ce weekend marque sa première participation à un événement continental depuis.

Médaillée de bronze des Jeux en 2019, Montero rejoindra les tapis d'Ottawa fraîchement médaillée d'argent du championnat 2020.

C'est Valverde, médaillée mondiale de bronze cadet en 2011, qui a décroché le titre cette année.

57 kg
En tête d'affiche de cette catégorie, la championne olympique de Rio 2016 Helen MAROULIS (USA), dont c'est la première participation à un événement panaméricain depuis 2012. Elle est championne du monde 2015 et 2017 et a fait l'impasse sur la saison 2019 pour mieux se préparer à cette année olympique.

Présentes également, la championne du monde en titre et médaillée de bronze 2016 Linda MORAIS (CAN), la championne panaméricaine 2019 Lissette Alexandra ANTES CASTILLO (ECU) et, médaillée de bronze la semaine dernière pour le Venezuela, Betzabeth Rebeca SARCO COLMENAREZ (VEN).

62 kg
Au sommet du tableau des inscriptions pour cette catégorie, la double médaillée olympique de bronze et médaillée mondiale de bronze 2017 Jackeline RENTERIA CASTILLO (COL), septième place la semaine dernière.

Michelle Christina FAZZARI (CAN), elle aussi médaillée mondiale (le bronze en 2017), sera sur les tapis d'Ottawa.

Kayla MIRACLE (USA), titrée aux Jeux panaméricains 2019, représentera les USA plutôt que la récente championne panaméricaine winner Mallory VELTE.

68 kg
Deux médaillées mondiales de bronze sont inscrites en 68kg, Danielle Suzanne LAPPAGE (CAN) et Yudari SANCHEZ RODRIGUEZ (CUB).

Lappage est médaillée mondiale d'argent 2018 et cette semaine marque sa première participation à un événement panaméricain senior ; elle tentera de qualifier son pays pour Tokyo.

Récemment médaillée d'argent, Sanchez arrive à Ottawa auréolée de trois médailles mondiales, l'or des U23 2018, l'argent junior et le bronze des U23 2017.

Les affronteront dans la catégorie la championne des panaméricains 2020 Yanet Ursula SOVERO NINO (PER) et la médaillée de bronze Maria Jose ACOSTA ACOSTA (VEN).

Les USA sont déjà qualifiés dans cette catégorie grâce au titre mondial remporté par Tamyra MENSAH-STOCK à Noursoultan.

76 kg
Autre championne olympique présente sur les tapis d'Ottawa ce weekend, Erica WIEBE (CAN) est inscrite dans la catégorie des 76kg. Elle est également médaillée mondiale de bronze 2018.

Talent prometteur, la championne du monde des juniors et des U23 2019 Milaimys de la Caridad MARIN POTRILLE (CUB), qui a fait épreuve de force la semaine dernière pour se contenter de la cinquième place.

Marin a chuté lors en combat pour la médaille de bronze face à la médaillée mondiale d'argent 2014 Aline DA SILVA FERREIRA (BRA), qui sera sur les tapis d'Ottawa dans quelques jours.

Elles y retrouveront la médaillée de bronze du championnat panaméricain 2020 Andrea Carolina OLAYA GUTIERREZ (COL).

Les USA sont également déjà qualifiés dans cette catégorie, grâce au titre décroché par Adeline GRAY lors des mondiaux 2019 - son cinquième titre mondial.

There are multiple Pan American champions that will compete for a qualification spot at 60 kg, including 2020 champion Dicther Hans TORO CASTANEDA (COL), 2019 champion Luis Alberto ORTA SANCHEZ (CUB) and 2015 and 2019 Pan Am Games champion Andres Roberto MONTANO ARROYO (ECU).

Also competing is 2019 Pan Am Games bronze medalist Ildar HAFIZOV (USA) and 2020 bronze medalists Jancel Miguel PIMENTEL GONZALEZ (DOM) and Emerson Isaias FELIPE ORDONEZ (GUA).

67 kg
There are three 2020 Pan American Championships medalists returning to competition this weekend.

Joilson DE BRITO RAMOS JUNIOR (BRA) won silver at 72 kg last weekend and will move down to 67 kg this weekend.

Cristhian Alberto RIVAS CASTRO (ECU) and Alejandro SANCHO (USA), who each won bronze at the championships are scheduled to compete in the Olympic Qualifier.

The 2020 Pan Am champ Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (CUB) will not compete as he already qualified Cuba for Tokyo after winning gold at the 2019 Worlds. Borrero is a 2016 Olympic champion and also won the 2015 World title.

77 kg
Yosvanys PENA FLORES (CUB) and Patrick SMITH (USA) traded wins at the 2020 Pan American Championships, with Smith winning the matchup in pool action and Pena ultimately claiming the title over Smith in the finals.

Pena also won the 2019 Pan American Championships, and later that year, Smith emerged with gold at the 20019 Pan American Games.

Both will wrestle again this weekend.

Also expected to compete is 2020 Pan Am bronze medalist Wuileixis de Jesus RIVAS ESPINOZA (VEN), who is a 2019 Pan Am Games runner-up.

87 kg
Bringing World medals to the weight is Daniel GREGORICH HECHAVARRIA (CUB), who is a 2018 U23 silver medalist and 2019 U23 bronze winner. Last week, he finished fifth at the Pan Am Championships, forfeiting in the bronze match.

Winning the 2020 Pan Am title was Josef RAU (USA. En route to his win last week, Rau defeated 2019 Pan Am Games champion Luis Eduardo AVENDANO ROJAS (VEN), who will also wrestle in the Qualifier.

Two other 2020 Pan Am medalists will compete, including silver medalist Carlos Andres MUNOZ JARAMILLO (COL) and bronze medalist Lesyan Osvaldo COUSIN OTOMURO (JAM).

97 kg
We will likely see another entertaining rivalry at 97 kg as the 2020 Pan Am champion G’Angelo HANCOCK (USA) and 2020 runner-up Gabriel Alejandro ROSILLO KINDELAN (CUB) will be back at it this weekend.

Similar to Pena and Smith at 77 kg, Hancock and Rosillo went head-to-head twice in the Pan Am Championships, with Rosillo winning in the pool action but Hancock getting the victory in the finals.

Both own age-group World medals with Rosillo claiming gold at the 2019 Junior Worlds and Hancock owning bronze from the 2016 Junior Worlds.

Another World medalist in the mix is Kevin MEJIA CASTILLO (HON), who finished fourth at the Pan Am Championships. Defeating Mejia in the bronze match was Luillys Jose PEREZ MORA (VEN), who is also registered for this weekend.

130 kg
Two World medalists highlight the field in Yasmani ACOSTA FERNANDEZ (CHI) and Adam COON (USA).

Acosta won bronze at the 2017 World Championships, and Coon earned silver in the 2018 Worlds.

The American is fresh off producing a silver medal at the 2020 Pan Ams, while Acosta entered the event but did not compete.

Both 2020 Pan Am bronze winners are registered: Leo Dalis SANTANA HEREDIA (DOM) and Moises Salvador PEREZ HELLBURG (VEN).

Cuba is already qualified at the weight, thanks to a silver medal from Oscar PINO HINDS at the 2019 World Championships. This weekend, Pino will compete in freestyle in attempt to qualify Cuba for the Olympic Games at 125 kg.

 

Olli victorieuse à Riga et garde sa place de No. 1 à 60 kg dans les classements de lutte féminine

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (April 6) – World silver medalist at 58kg Petra OLLI (FIN) returned to the non-Olympic category of 60kg to claim her first senior European crown and reclaim the No.1 position in United World Wrestling’s rankings of women’s wrestling.

Olli qualified Finland at 58kg for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at last year’s world meet in Las Vegas, but has since returned to 60kg where she won her fourth Klippan Open crown in February and the European championship in March.

In Riga, Olli rolled up technical falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals before upending world champion Oksana HERHEL (UKR), 8-2, in the championship bout and replacing the headlock happy Herhel at the top of the 60kg ranks.

Olli, who turns 22 in June, has won four junior European titles, 2011-2014, and took the inaugural European under-23 title last year. Her victory in Poland lifted her to No.1 in the rankings where she stayed for three months before finishing 14th at 63kg in the European Games last June.

Meanwhile, the usual suspects remain on top of the other seven categories with three-time Olympic Games champions Saori YOSHIDA (JPN) and Kaori ICHO (JPN) leading the way at 53kg and 58kg, respectively.

The Japanese stars are each followed in the rankings by a Mattsson sister – Sofia MATTSSON (SWE) at 53kg and Johanna MATTSSON (SWE) at 58kg.

Sofia won her fourth continental crown in a row and fifth overall in Riga, pinning all four opponents she faced. Johanna, meanwhile, won the prestigious Klippan Open for a second time in February.

Adeline GRAY (USA), meanwhile, is in her second year on top of the 75kg rankings, but Yasemin ADAR (TUR) seems poised to make a challenge after winning the European title in March to make a leap from 16th to No.6 in the heavyweight rankings.

48kg – Medved Prizes titlist Jyldyz ESHIMOVA (KAZ) won the Asia qualifying tourney in Astana to join the rankings at No.5 while European Games silver medalist Elitsa YANKOVA (BUL) returned to competition with a bronze medal at the European championships for No.9.
